Meet John Cox and Gavin Newsom, the candidates for California governor

Californians will vote on Nov. 6 to replace termed-out Gov. Jerry Brown with either Rancho Santa Fe businessman John Cox, a Republican, or Lt. Gov. and former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat. The Union-Tribune Editorial Board invited both candidates to endorsement interviews. Only Newsom accepted despite a series of requests and multiple conversations over several months with the Cox campaign.
